Vastu shastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. Five basic elements of the universe are These basic elements are Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND). Vastu shastra is a complete understanding of direction, geography, topography, environment and physics. Vastu is essentially the art of correct settings one can place himself in such a manner as to derive maximum benefits.

The word " VASTU " has been derived from ' VASTOSHPATI ' used in ' Rig Veda ' and is meant to provide protection, hapiness and prosperity in this life as well as after death. Vastu Shastra believes in the existence of Vastu Purush who is main deity of a building. In this regard Rigved
(Oldest among 4 vedas) says:

AVA TVAM VASTUNYU IMASI GA MADHYE
YATR GAVAU BHURI SHRINGA AVASAH ||

which means Vastu has a relation with greh devta (deity of the home). The ancient relics say that Vastu is based on "positive" and "negative" forces, which are constantly interacting with each other on the surface of the land. These forces should get disturbed whenever any structure is erected on a vacant land, to maintain a balance.
